Auto Rickshaw Fare Dispute Turns Into Language Row In Bengaluru: Woman Shares Ordeal On Instagram

Is it mandatory to learn a local language in you want to live in another part of the country? People are facing disputes almost every day over the language. This language row in Karnataka is now affecting everyone. In a recent incident, an Instagram user named Anya S shared her experience after an argument over auto rickshaw fare turned into a language controversy.

As per Anya's video, the auto driver is seen speaking aggressively in Kannada. Anya felt threatened and called out to a nearby man for help, saying, "Bhaiyya, aap idhar aao. Mujhe inse darr lag raha hai (Please come here. This man is scaring me)." The incident has sparked discussions about commuter safety and language barriers.

The conflict arose over the auto ride fare, which Anya booked through Rapido. The app displayed Rs 296, but the driver demanded Rs 390. When Anya refused to pay the higher amount, the driver's behaviour turned aggressive. "He lost it," she recounted, explaining how he tried to intimidate her and mocked her for speaking Hindi instead of Kannada.

Language Barriers and Safety Concerns

Anya clarified that her frustration wasn't with learning Kannada but with the disrespectful treatment she received. She expressed her desire to learn the local language but questioned herself due to such encounters. "This was about entitlement, aggression, and disrespect," she stated.

Despite usually tipping generously after good rides, Anya refused to give in when faced with intimidation or demands for overpayment. She emphasised that residents contribute to the city's economy and deserve fairness and safety regardless of their language.

Company Response and Future Measures

Rapido responded to Anya's post by stating that they have permanently barred the driver from their platform. They assured that customer safety and dignity are top priorities and mentioned plans to implement stronger protocols for drivers to prevent similar incidents.

Anya ended her post with words of encouragement for others who have faced similar situations: "If you've ever felt unsafe or second-guessed yourself in moments like this, you are not wrong. You are not alone. And you have every right to say no."
