Arrested BJP Leader CT Ravi Likely To Be Taken To Bengaluru

Following allegations of making derogatory remarks about Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar's character in the Assembly, BJP MLC C.T. Ravi was arrested in Belagavi on December 19, 2024. The arrest was made by a police team headed by Assistant Commissioner S.M. Satyanayak, outside Suvarna Soudha, on charges including outraging the modesty of a woman and sexual assault. Subsequently, he was taken to the Hirebagewadi police station, where charges were filed against him under specific sections of the law, leading to a complex legal situation given the mixed bailable and non-bailable nature of the charges.

In the midst of these developments, Ravi lodged a complaint at the Khanapur police station against unidentified supporters of Hebbalkar, accusing them of assault with intent to murder. He also voiced concerns about threats to his life from Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar and Channaraj Hattiholi, MLC and Hebbalkar's brother, highlighting the tense political undertones in this legal battle. Despite his efforts, Ravi claimed that the Khanapur police did not register a First Information Report (FIR) in response to his allegations.

Legal Proceedings and Police Actions

Scheduled to appear before a special court in Bengaluru, Ravi's transfer to the city was discussed, with officials considering flying him to ensure his timely court appearance. This follows his vocal protest against the Belagavi police, accusing them of unnecessary detainment and lack of communication. His protest escalated to a sit-in, where he publicly accused the police of orchestrating a murder attempt against him—an allegation the police have fervently denied, attributing an injury he sustained to an accidental self-inflicted wound during transport.

Amid these accusations, Ravi's arrest has stirred significant attention, notably bringing BJP leaders and supporters to rally outside the Khanapur police station. This move was aimed at averting potential law and order issues, considering the large gathering at the Hirebagewadi police station where Ravi was initially taken. His subsequent transfer to Khanapur under police escort further underscores the precarious situation.

Political Repercussions and Accusations

The arrest has not only led to legal challenges for Ravi but also ignited political controversies, with BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal accusing Belagavi police of excessive action to curry favor with political superiors. Yatnal's critique extends to the broader implications of such actions, suggesting a disregard for legal processes and a potential ambition within the police ranks, hinting at the Belagavi commissioner's aspirations. He firmly reminded that courts in India remain operational and that the central government is led by the BJP, insinuating that those responsible for any undue actions will eventually have to answer for them.
