Vajpayee, who was known for his superb oratory skills, turned silent after suffering a stroke in 2009 and according to a Times of India article, no one comes to the ailing Vajpayee today to speak about party affairs or to listen to his poems. LK Advani, former chief minister of Uttarakhand BC Khanduri and Vajpayee's old friend NM Ghatate visit him regularly. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is another person who is in regular touch with Vajpayee. The two has an old association.

Ghatate said Vajpayee is still mentally alert. Till his stroke in 2009, he used to keep himself busy in reading and writing. Now, he spends a major part of his day in treating himself, the report said.
But Ghatate misses the wit that Vajpayee was known for, said the ToI article. he is currently compiling the former PM's jokes and wits into a book.
