AI-Driven Digital Billboard in Bengaluru Shows Drivers' Name With Pending Challans in Real Time
Bengaluru has introduced India's first AI-driven digital billboard to display real-time traffic violations and expired vehicle documents, such as Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. Located at Trinity Circle, this initiative aims to improve road safety by publicly showing violations as vehicles pass. This effort is a collaboration between Bengaluru Traffic Police, Cars24, CrashFree India, and Monday Ventures, highlighting the city's commitment to using technology for public accountability.

The billboard uses advanced cameras capable of scanning licence plates from 100 metres away. It retrieves compliance data from the national VAHAN database within ten seconds. Vehicles with unpaid fines or expired documents have their details displayed for all to see. Even vehicles without violations are acknowledged, making the system both a deterrent and a reward mechanism.
Addressing Traffic Violations in Bengaluru
Bengaluru grapples with significant traffic violations, with over one crore vehicles on its roads daily and nearly 30,000 offences recorded each day. In 2024 alone, the traffic police registered 82.9 lakh cases and collected ₹849 crore in fines. The first eight months of 2025 saw another 45 lakh violations, resulting in over ₹1,150 crore in penalties. Despite various awareness campaigns and digital initiatives, persistent violations remain a challenge.
Recently, within three weeks, the police recovered ₹106 crore from 37.86 lakh cases after offering a 50% concession on outstanding fines. Authorities believe that the public nature of this AI system could finally encourage compliance and lead to safer roads.
While authorities praise the billboard as a progressive step towards road safety and enforcement, public opinion is mixed.
Supporters emphasise its strong deterrent potential and instant awareness creation. Critics express concerns about privacy and the risks of public shaming.
Reacting to the initiative, one user commented, "Can they install a billboard opposite the offices of BBMP engineers, commissioners, and MLAs' residences to highlight the potholes across Bengaluru? A simple way to reflect their performance."
Another user remarked, "Seems like the government is just shaking people down. Probably the only way to make citizens pay."
A different comment added, "We also need a pothole updater and a resolved-status billboard."
Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Karthik Reddy stated that the initiative supplements existing enforcement efforts by publicly highlighting rule violators to encourage responsible citizenship.
As Bengaluru pilots this bold initiative, residents and urban planners across India will closely monitor its impact. Responsible civic engagement and open dialogue are crucial for navigating this complex terrain effectively.
