Actor Ranya Rao's Gold Smuggling Case Triggers Airport Security Overhaul
The Karnataka government is implementing stricter security protocols at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) following allegations of gold smuggling facilitated by misuse of the protocol wing. Under the new measures, protocol services will now be restricted to travelling officials only, effectively barring their family members and friends from availing these privileges.
This decision comes in response to the recent apprehension of actor Ranya Rao, who was allegedly caught smuggling gold using protocol access. The revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) aim to prevent the misuse of airport services by limiting protocol staff assistance strictly to government officials.

New Restrictions on Protocol Services
Umashankar S R, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), emphasized the need to streamline security privileges. He clarified, "There is no provision for extending security to anyone beyond the officer (IPS or IAS). Additional security is provided only in cases where an official faces a threat... then security may be extended to the officer's immediate family." His statement underscores the government's commitment to curbing potential misuse of protocol services for illegal activities.
The policy overhaul follows the detention of a protocol staffer suspected of assisting Ranya Rao in her alleged smuggling operations. While initial reports suggested complicity, the staffer was later released after stating that he had only followed orders to assist the daughter of a senior officer and was unaware of the contents of her luggage. The incident, however, highlighted serious security lapses at the airport, prompting immediate intervention.
Stronger Surveillance to Combat Smuggling
Authorities are now evaluating additional measures to strengthen airport security and prevent future smuggling attempts. Discussions include enhanced surveillance, stricter checks on protocol passengers, and increased monitoring of airport staff handling VIP services. Officials believe these steps will help safeguard the integrity of airport operations and prevent further exploitation of security privileges.
