56-Year-Old Woman Dies On Pothole-Riddled Sarjapur Road
In Bengaluru's Sarjapur area, heavy rains wreaked havoc, leading to a tragic accident where a 56-year-old woman, Mallika, lost her life. She was riding as a pillion on her husband Muniraju's scooter. They had slowed down to navigate through hazardous road conditions caused by potholes when a mini-truck collided with them. This incident has been reported as the city's first rain-related fatality of the year. Sarjapur experienced a significant downpour, recording 40mm of rainfall that severely impaired visibility and contributed to the perilous road conditions.

The ongoing monsoon has left Bengaluru grappling with widespread waterlogging, affecting low-lying areas and major roads throughout the city. According to the Times of India, the rainfall average hit 62mm, highlighting the extent of the deluge. The waterlogged streets have not only caused traffic disruptions but have also turned into a danger zone for the city's commuters. In a related incident, a physically disabled woman fell into a pothole in Varthur, a suburb on Bengaluru's eastern periphery, further underscoring the perilous state of the city's infrastructure amid the monsoon season.
The aftermath of the accidents and the hazardous conditions prompted responses from local authorities. In the case of the wall collapse at the Gandhi Krishi Vigyana Kendra (GKVK) compound adjacent to the Judicial Layout, the Yelahanka zonal team acted swiftly to clear the debris, aiming to restore safety and normalcy. These incidents have cast a spotlight on the challenges Bengaluru faces during heavy rainfall, from infrastructure damage to the heightened risk of accidents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted further rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns about additional impacts on the city's already strained infrastructure.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the truck driver involved in the fatal accident with Mallika and Muniraju fled the scene after the collision. Muniraju, who was injured in the accident, is currently receiving medical attention in the hospital. A police officer remarked that Mallika might have survived the collision if the roads had been in better condition, highlighting the critical role that road maintenance plays in ensuring commuter safety during adverse weather conditions.
