18-Year-Old College Student Groped, Kissed, and Bitten by Stranger in Bengaluru’s Nagawara; Accused Arrested
An 18-year-old college student was sexually assaulted in broad daylight in Bengaluru's Nagawara area, raising fresh concerns over women's safety in the city. The incident occurred on July 11, between 7:45 and 8:00 pm, while the student was shopping near a grocery store.
According to police, the young woman had just parked her scooter and was preparing to cross the road when a stranger suddenly attacked her from behind. He forcibly hugged her, proceeded to kiss her without consent, and even bit her lip, causing visible injury. Despite her repeated resistance, the assailant continued to touch her inappropriately and attempted to undress her on the street.

The student managed to escape, ran to her scooter, and tried to flee. The accused chased her briefly, hurling abuses, until two pedestrians intervened, forcing him to run away.
Accused Identified and Arrested
Traumatised by the incident, the survivor remained confined to her home for days. After informing her parents, they approached the police and filed a formal complaint. Officers at Govindapura Police Station promptly launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from the area.
The accused was identified as 28-year-old Mohammad Maroof Sharief, a local pet bird shop owner. He was arrested and charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sexual harassment, assault, and stalking.
Rising Concerns Over Women's Safety in Bengaluru
This incident has once again brought Bengaluru's public safety standards into question, especially for women commuting alone. Citizens and women's rights groups have urged authorities to step up patrolling in public spaces, install more CCTV cameras, and ensure swift legal action against offenders.
Police officials assured that the survivor is receiving counselling support, and the investigation is ongoing.
