160 Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Booked For Refusing Hires, Overcharging On South Bengaluru Roads
In a move to improve the city's traffic situation, the Bengaluru Traffic Police's South Division took stern action against 160 auto-rickshaw drivers on July 3, 2024. The drivers were booked for various offenses, including refusing to take passengers, overcharging, violating uniform regulations, and illegal parking.
This crackdown is a clear warning to all auto-rickshaw drivers that failure to follow traffic rules will result in strict action. The Traffic Police are determined to ensure a smoother ride for commuters in Bengaluru, and this move is a step towards achieving that goal.

The initiative comes amidst growing concerns over the conduct of auto-rickshaw drivers in Bengaluru, where issues such as arbitrary fare hikes and selective service refusal have been persistent problems for commuters. By enforcing strict penalties on offenders, the Traffic Police aim to send a clear message that such behaviors will not be tolerated.
Earlier, following several complaints regarding the use of high-beam headlights at night, the Bengaluru Traffic Police initiated a crackdown on offenders causing inconvenience to fellow commuters. Karnataka police reported a total of 1518 cases registered against individuals for the installation and use of high-beam lights.
Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Karnataka Police (Traffic and Road Safety), highlighted the enforcement efforts in a post on X, stating, "The crackdown continues with 1518 cases booked for violating Central Motor Vehicle Rules, which prohibit the use of glaring or dazzling LED headlights. Kudos to our Officers & men for sustained action."
Among the reported cases, Bengaluru accounted for 686 violations, while Mangaluru saw 98 cases. The Karwar region recorded 131 instances of violations, whereas Udupi did not report any cases.
The stringent enforcement aims to curb the use of high-beam lights that pose risks to road safety and inconvenience other drivers. This proactive measure underscores the commitment of Karnataka's traffic authorities to uphold regulations and ensure safer driving conditions across the state.
