10 Bengaluru Metro Stations Could Soon Feature Cycle Parking – Here’s Where

The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has initiated a study to assess the feasibility of expanding and installing bicycle docks at 10 more Bengaluru Metro stations, as reported by The Indian Express.

In collaboration with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), DULT previously launched a pilot project to design, implement, and fund cycle stands and pedal ports at 10 Metro stations. The goal of this initiative is to enhance last-mile connectivity and promote sustainable transportation.

The newly selected Metro stations for expanded cycle parking facilities include Kengeri Bus Terminal, KR Puram, Madavara, Chikkabidarakallu, Manjunatha Nagara, Dasarahalli, National College, Banashankari, Jaya Prakash Nagar, and Silk Institute.

Each of these stations is set to receive cycle parking modules, with some featuring covered cycle stands and surface treatments. The selection of these stations was based on factors like ridership, available land and space for both four-wheeler and two-wheeler parking, and, notably, the positive feedback from the use of cycle stands at the pilot stations.

In June 2024, DULT conducted an evaluation of cycle parking facilities at 10 Metro stations, including Nagasandra, Peenya, Mahalakshmi, Rajajinagar, Mahakavi Kuvempu Road, Jayanagar, Yelachenahalli, Konanakunte Cross, Swami Vivekananda Road, and Baiyapanahalli.

The assessment revealed high weekday occupancy rates, reaching up to 113% at stations like Yelachenahalli, Konanakunte Cross, and Swami Vivekananda Road, reflecting strong demand. Conversely, stations such as Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmi Layout, and Peenya showed lower usage, likely due to the availability of other last-mile public transport options. The study also noted a greater demand for cycle parking at high-ridership stations, with a preference for parking within paid areas, where better security through surveillance is offered.
