After years of complaints about never-ending traffic snarls at Hebbal junction, one of the city's most critical choke points, the proposed six-lane short tunnel project has entered a crucial phase. Four major infrastructure players have submitted bids for the ₹1,086-crore project, signalling serious momentum for what could become one of Bengaluru's biggest mobility interventions.

The tender, floated by the Bangalore Development Authority, has attracted interest from the Adani Group, Dilip Buildcon, Vishwa Samudra Engineering, and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. All four firms bring experience in executing high-value transport and infrastructure projects, including highways, tunnels and urban flyovers.

Why Hebbal Matters

Hebbal is not just another busy junction. It is a strategic interchange linking north Bengaluru, the Outer Ring Road corridor, and the route to Kempegowda International Airport. With residential growth exploding in Yelahanka, Manyata Tech Park belt and other northern suburbs, traffic volumes at the junction have consistently exceeded capacity.

Even with flyovers and signal reconfiguration, peak-hour gridlock remains routine. Long airport commutes and spillback congestion into adjoining neighbourhoods have made Hebbal a symbol of Bengaluru's broader mobility crisis.

What the Tunnel Aims to Fix

The proposed six-lane underground corridor is designed to allow through-traffic - particularly airport-bound and long-distance vehicles - to bypass surface-level intersections. By separating local and through movement, planners expect a smoother traffic flow and reduced signal dependency above ground.

If executed efficiently, the project could significantly reduce travel times along the corridor, especially during morning and evening peaks. However, experts caution that such interventions work best when integrated with broader traffic planning rather than treated as standalone fixes.
