US Adds OpenAI, Google, Anthropic To List of Approved AI Vendors For Federal Agencies

The U.S. government's central purchasing body, the General Services Administration (GSA), has approved OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude as AI vendors, Reuters reported.

This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance AI usage across federal agencies. The GSA aims to ensure these AI models are truthful, accurate, transparent, and free from ideological bias.

With the new AI blueprint released on July 23, the GSA intends to relax environmental regulations and significantly increase AI exports to allied nations. This initiative is designed to maintain America's technological advantage over China. The approved AI tools will be accessible for government use with pre-established contract terms.

AI Solutions for Federal Agencies

Federal agencies will have access to a diverse array of AI solutions. These range from basic research assistants powered by large language models to highly specialized applications tailored for specific missions. President Donald Trump has described the competition in artificial intelligence as a defining battle of the 21st century. His administration's plan includes around 90 recommendations aimed at boosting U.S. AI software and hardware exports while curbing state laws that hinder AI development.

This approach marks a significant shift from former President Joe Biden's policies, which imposed strict global access controls on valuable AI chips. Biden had mandated federal agencies using AI to implement safeguards and continuously evaluate its impact on the public.

Biden also signed an executive order focused on fostering competition, safeguarding consumers, and preventing misinformation through AI. However, this measure was later rescinded by Trump's administration as part of their broader strategy.
