Rajasthan Embraces AI & Machine Learning for Mineral Exploration in Groundbreaking Move
Rajasthan is all set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for mineral exploration-a first for the state. Thus, taking a major step to modernise its mining sector.
Officials told IANS that initial preparations have begun, and reports on the initiative are expected within 45 days.

Pilot Project in Key Districts
T. Ravikant, Principal Secretary of Mines and Geology, announced that a pilot project will be launched in Bhilwara, Bharatpur, and select areas of Chittorgarh to identify potential zones of critical and strategic minerals using AI.
The project will be executed by the Rajasthan State Mineral Exploration Trust (RSMET) in collaboration with a private exploration agency approved by the Central Government.
Why AI? Faster, Cheaper & More Accurate
Rajasthan is already a leader in major mineral auctions, with mining revenues seeing a significant boost. Out of the 82 types of minerals found in the state, 57 are currently being mined.
However, traditional exploration methods are slow and expensive. AI will change that. Ravikant explained, "The AI-based approach will save time, cost, and labour while increasing the scientific accuracy of mineral detection."
How Will It Work?
The AI-driven exploration will analyze data from:
- Satellite imagery
- Ground penetration radar
- Historical geological surveys (from both state and central agencies)
The Hyderabad-based NPEA Critical Mineral Tracker, a private firm working under the Central Government, will lead the project. This agency is already active in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and will now extend its expertise to Rajasthan.
Once AI identifies high-potential zones, drilling and chemical analysis of core samples will follow. Based on the results, mineral blocks will be prepared for auction.
Focus on Critical Minerals
Rajasthan has vast limestone reserves and untapped potential for copper, base metals, and iron ore. Both the state and central governments are prioritizing these critical minerals, essential for national development and technological growth.
Deepak Tanwar, Director of Mines, called this a transformative step, saying, "This is the first time AI is being employed for mineral exploration in Rajasthan. It's a transformative step that will bring speed, precision, and innovation to the sector."
With this move, Rajasthan is set to revolutionize its mining industry-making exploration faster, smarter, and more efficient than ever before.
