Meta To Build AI Data Center With $100bn, Supercluster To Be Operational By 2026, Announces Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Meta plans to invest hundreds of billions in developing AI data centres for superintelligence. This move is part of Meta's strategy to secure top AI talent and advance technology that surpasses human capabilities. The company has been actively pursuing high-profile deals and offering substantial pay packages to accelerate its AI initiatives, Reuters reported.
Meta recently restructured its AI operations by forming a new division named Superintelligence Labs. This change followed challenges with the Llama 4 model and the departure of key personnel. The new division aims to generate revenue through the Meta AI app, image-to-video ad tools, and smart glasses.

AI Data Centres and Future Plans
Zuckerberg revealed these investment plans in a Threads post, highlighting the strength of Meta's core advertising business as a financial backbone for this ambitious spending. He referenced a report from Semianalysis, which stated that Meta is on track to be the first lab to bring online a 1-gigawatt-plus supercluster, designed for training advanced AI models.
Meta is constructing several multi-gigawatt data centre clusters to support its AI goals. The first cluster, named Prometheus, is expected to be operational by 2026. Another cluster, Hyperion, will have the capacity to scale up to 5 gigawatts over time. Additional clusters are also in development.
Leadership and Financial Moves
The leadership of Meta Superintelligence Labs will include former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman. This follows Meta's $14.3 billion investment in Scale. Additionally, Meta has proposed acquiring a minority stake in funds managed by Friedman and tech investor Daniel Gross NFDG through a tender offer.
In April, Meta increased its projected capital expenditure for 2025 to between $64 billion and $72 billion. This decision aims to strengthen its position against competitors like OpenAI and Google. Despite concerns from investors about potential returns on such large investments, Zuckerberg remains confident in Meta's financial capability.
Meta shares experienced a 1% increase in trading value, contributing to an overall rise of over 20% this year. Zuckerberg has personally led efforts to recruit top talent for the Superintelligence Labs division as part of his aggressive approach towards advancing Meta's AI capabilities.
The company's strategic moves reflect its commitment to staying ahead in the competitive field of artificial intelligence while leveraging its robust advertising business as a financial foundation for these ambitious projects.
