The Privacy Issue That Every User Of Meta AI App Should Know
The Meta AI app, introduced in April 2025, has gained attention as a leading artificial intelligence platform. Despite its advanced features, it has raised significant privacy concerns. Experts and users alike worry that the app's design choices may compromise sensitive personal data.
Meta AI functions as both a chatbot and a social platform, allowing users to engage in conversations on various topics such as personal issues, medical queries, legal advice, and emotional support. However, the "Discover" feed feature enables users to share these AI interactions publicly. While this might seem harmless initially, many shared discussions contain deeply personal information that users may not realise is being exposed.

Privacy Concerns with Meta AI
While Meta claims chats are private by default, the app encourages sharing through a simple "Share" button. This feature lacks strong warnings or clear messages about the public nature of shared posts. Consequently, users may inadvertently disclose personal details without understanding the implications. Sensitive information like health issues, legal concerns, and financial data has already appeared on the public feed.
Privacy experts argue that Meta's design choices are deliberate rather than accidental. The company seems intent on making AI a social experience by encouraging widespread sharing of interactions. However, this approach poses several risks. The public Discover feed often contains highly sensitive data that was never intended for strangers' eyes.
Risks of Exposing Sensitive Data
The exposure of private information can lead to identity theft or harassment if accessed by malicious individuals. Additionally, privacy settings are often buried deep within menus, making them difficult for users to find and use effectively. Many people remain unaware of these options and accidentally expose private information.
Meta AI's connection to Facebook and Instagram further complicates matters. Public posts often display users' full names and profile photos, making it easier for others to identify who shared private conversations. Experts also highlight the use of dark patterns—design tricks that guide users into decisions they might not fully understand—making it easy to share private conversations while obscuring risks.
Data Collection Practices
Beyond sharing features, Meta AI collects vast amounts of personal data from users. The AI uses information from Facebook and Instagram to personalise responses while storing conversations by default for future model training. Although users can delete chat histories, the process is complex and poorly explained.
Meta's history with personal data handling has been controversial before. Lawsuits in Europe and Brazil have accused Meta of scraping user data without proper consent. Internal documents reveal plans to automate content reviews related to AI safety and privacy; however, complex cases may still require human intervention.
User Reactions and Expert Opinions
Many experts and privacy groups have voiced concerns about the Meta AI app. Privacy organisations warn that users may not fully grasp that their conversations could become public. Technology analysts label the app a "privacy disaster," likening the public feed to a horror movie where people inadvertently share their deepest secrets.
Cybersecurity experts stress that linking real names with shared conversations poses serious risks for personal safety. Malware researchers argue that Meta fails to adequately warn users about linking AI chats with social media accounts.
