India's AI Initiatives Enhance Economic Growth And Accessibility To Technology: Ashwini Vaishnaw

India's approach to Artificial Intelligence focuses on accessibility and economic growth. Initiatives like AIKosh and the National Language Translation Mission aim to enhance data availability and support diverse sectors, significantly impacting the country's development.

India's approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) aims to make technology accessible to all, fostering economic growth and job creation, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw. He highlighted that this strategy aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and leverages the country's expanding tech sector. With annual revenues expected to surpass $280 billion, India employs over six million people in this field.

India is home to more than 1,800 Global Capability Centres, with 500 focusing on AI. The start-up ecosystem is thriving, as evidenced by 89% of last year's new start-ups being AI-driven. Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha that India ranks among the top nations in AI capabilities and is the second-largest contributor to AI projects on GitHub.

AI Initiatives and Data Accessibility

The government initiated the IndiaAI Mission in 2024 to sustain this momentum. A significant component of this mission is AIKosh, a platform offering over 1,200 India-specific datasets and 217 AI models. These datasets cover diverse areas like farmer queries and medical imaging, sourced from government bodies, academia, and start-ups.

AIKosh prioritises privacy and local relevance while providing high-quality data. A sandbox mechanism allows start-ups and researchers to test AI tools in a controlled setting. The Bharat Data Exchange complements AIKosh by facilitating structured access to government-owned data.

Language Translation and Research Programmes

Under the National Language Translation Mission, Digital India Bhashini is developing AI solutions in 22 Indian languages with input from over 70 institutions. Other initiatives include the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), which has set up 25 innovation hubs across the country.

The Indian Council of Medical Research's Health Data Repository hosts clinical datasets that meet global standards. Research programmes such as IMPRINT, Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana, and Anusandhan National Research Foundation's AI-for-Science initiative are advancing AI applications in science, education, and healthcare sectors.

Impact on Growth and Development

The Minister noted that these efforts result in high-quality, unbiased datasets available in vernacular languages for various AI applications. This contributes significantly to India's development trajectory by enhancing technological capabilities across multiple domains.
