Election Commission Of India Issues Warning On AI Misuse Ahead Of Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

The Election Commission of India has issued a warning to political parties regarding the misuse of AI tools in creating misleading deepfakes ahead of the Bihar assembly elections in 2025. The commission emphasised that maintaining the integrity of the electoral process is crucial. They are closely monitoring social media to prevent any distortion or misinformation that could affect the election atmosphere.

Political parties and their representatives have been instructed to clearly label any AI-generated or synthetic content shared on social media or used in advertisements. Labels such as "AI-Generated," "Digitally Enhanced," or "Synthetic Content" should be prominently displayed. This measure aims to ensure transparency and prevent voters from being misled by manipulated content.

Model Code of Conduct Guidelines

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been activated following the announcement of election dates. It includes guidelines for online content shared by candidates and political parties. According to the MCC, criticism should focus on policies, programmes, past records, and work, avoiding personal attacks unrelated to public activities. Unverified allegations or distortions against other parties or their workers are discouraged.

The MCC serves as a framework for political conduct during elections, covering aspects like meetings, processions, manifestos, polling, and overall behaviour. It is enforced from the moment the election schedule is announced until the electoral process concludes. The Election Commission has put measures in place to ensure compliance with these guidelines.

Upcoming Bihar Elections

Bihar's Legislative Assembly elections will occur in two phases: November 6 and 11, with results declared on November 14. The contest is anticipated between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JDU) alliance against the Mahagathbandhan led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party is also participating.

The Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to strictly enforce MCC guidelines throughout this period. Any violations will be addressed firmly to maintain a fair electoral environment.
