All-in-One AI Browser? Perplexity’s Comet Automates Tasks, Tabs & Even Emails
Perplexity AI, backed by NVIDIA, has introduced Comet, its first AI-driven web browser. This browser integrates Perplexity's AI search engine and is tailored for users who frequently use the internet for tasks like work and research. According to a blog post by Perplexity AI, Comet aims to simplify browsing by turning complex tasks into smooth conversations. Users can ask Comet to perform actions such as booking meetings or sending emails based on viewed content.

Comet Assistant is a notable feature of this new browser. It acts as an AI agent that automates routine tasks like summarising emails and managing tabs. Accessible from the top right corner of the browser window, it allows users to interact with webpage content directly. Unlike traditional browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, Comet uses a workspace instead of tabs, enabling quick access to all sought information.
AI-Powered Browsing Experience
The browser tracks user activity, suggesting related content based on what has been read or viewed. It can close inactive tabs automatically and provide reminders about previous sessions' activities. Additionally, Comet offers functionalities such as checking calendars, providing video summaries, and accessing messages from platforms like LinkedIn without switching between multiple tabs.
Perplexity AI aims to offer an alternative to conventional search engines like Google with Comet. Although this might slow widespread adoption, it could be beneficial for those who conduct extensive online research daily. Currently, access is limited to early waitlist invitees unless one opts for Perplexity's $200 monthly Max plan.
Future Expansion Plans
The company plans to expand Comet's availability and introduce it on more platforms soon but hasn't specified when this will occur. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also reportedly developing its own AI-powered browser featuring a ChatGPT-like chat interface for direct interaction rather than navigating through websites.
Comet's design focuses on creating seamless interactions during browsing sessions by merging complex workflows into fluid conversations. This approach aims to enhance productivity for users who rely heavily on internet-based tasks.
While Perplexity AI leads with its innovative browser solution, other companies are also exploring similar technologies in the rapidly evolving field of AI-powered web browsing experiences.
