AI System Safeguards Elephants On Railway Tracks In Coimbatore, Preventing Fatalities

An AI-driven system in Coimbatore has facilitated 2,800 safe elephant crossings and generated over 6,000 alerts since February 2024, preventing fatalities on railway tracks. This innovative technology aids wildlife conservation efforts by ensuring the safety of both animals and trains.

An AI-driven system has been instrumental in preventing elephant fatalities on railway tracks in the Madukkarai forest range of Coimbatore. Since its launch in February 2024, it has facilitated around 2,800 safe crossings for elephants. The system has generated over 6,000 alerts specifically for elephants near or crossing railway tracks.

The AI technology operates through camera-mounted towers along the railway tracks, known as 'A' and 'B' lines, which traverse reserve forest areas connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These cameras help detect not only elephants but also other wildlife such as gaur, deer, leopards, dholes, and even King cobras. In total, the system has produced more than 10,000 alerts for various animal movements.

AI System's Impact on Wildlife Safety

District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj confirmed that since the implementation of this early warning system, no incidents of elephants colliding with trains have occurred in this section. The AI-based system's effectiveness is evident as it continues to safeguard wildlife by alerting authorities to potential dangers.

A dedicated team of 20 staff members is responsible for track patrols when the AI system detects elephant movement near railway tracks. Among them, 15 staff are assigned to night patrols to ensure prompt responses to alerts. Additionally, four staff manage the control and command centre.

Coordinated Efforts for Enhanced Safety

Alerts generated by the system are communicated to station masters at nearby railway stations and loco pilots of trains passing through these areas. This ensures they are aware of elephant presence near tracks and can adjust train speeds accordingly to prevent accidents.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav will visit Coimbatore on Tuesday for World Elephant Day celebrations. He plans to inspect the AI-based system at Madukkarai and engage with Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials regarding its operations and impact.

This innovative approach highlights a significant advancement in wildlife conservation efforts within India. By leveraging technology, authorities can better protect both animals and human lives from potential rail-related accidents.
