Niti Aayog Report Highlights AI Job Transformation In India And Urges Action For Workforce Adaptation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already transforming jobs in India's technology and Customer Experience (CX) sectors, valued at USD 245 billion. Niti Aayog warns that without prompt measures, roles like quality assurance engineers and support agents could soon become obsolete. The report, 'Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy', highlights both the threat of job displacement by 2031 and the potential to create up to 4 million new jobs within five years.

To harness this potential, Niti Aayog suggests launching a National AI Talent Mission. This initiative aims to position India as a global leader in AI workforce development. By focusing on skilling, reskilling, and innovation, India could become a hub for AI-first roles such as Ethical AI Specialists, AI Trainers, Sentiment Analysts, and AI DevOps Engineers.

AI Literacy and Reskilling

The roadmap outlines a mission-mode strategy based on three pillars: integrating AI into education to make it a foundational skill; creating a national reskilling engine for technology and CX professionals; and establishing India as an attractive destination for global AI talent. This approach aims to retain domestic talent while attracting international experts.

Collaboration between the proposed India AI Talent Mission and the existing India AI Mission is crucial. Partnerships among academia, government, and industry are essential to build an ecosystem with the necessary compute infrastructure and data availability. This will help transform trained talent into future innovators and researchers.

Leadership and Coordination

The report stresses that India's success in the AI economy depends on decisive action. With coordinated leadership from government, industry, and academia, India can protect its workforce while leading global AI advancements. The focus should be on embedding AI literacy across schools, universities, and vocational programs.

Niti Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam emphasized India's strength lies in its people. "With over 9 million technology and customer experience professionals, and the world's largest pool of young digital talent, we have both the scale and ambition," he stated. "What we need now is urgency, vision, and coordination."

The report suggests that by fostering collaboration between various stakeholders, India can create an enabling environment for innovation in AI. This includes developing infrastructure that supports data availability and computing power necessary for training skilled professionals.

India's future in the AI economy hinges on taking swift action to adapt to these changes. By doing so, it can not only safeguard existing jobs but also create new opportunities in emerging fields related to artificial intelligence.
