Who is Agnimitra Paul? The Only Woman Minister In BJP’s Bengal Cabinet: From Fashion Designer To Minister

The Bharatiya Janata Party's first government in West Bengal has started its journey with only one woman in the state cabinet - Agnimitra Paul. The 51-year-old BJP leader took oath as a minister alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, becoming the lone female representative in the new Bengal government.

A former fashion designer who later entered politics, Agnimitra Paul's rise in the BJP has been one of the most talked-about political journeys in West Bengal in recent years.

BJP's Only Woman Minister In Bengal Cabinet

Agnimitra Paul took oath along with senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania and Kshudiram Tudu.

Her inclusion in the cabinet is politically important for the BJP, especially because the party has often spoken about increasing women's participation in politics and governance.

Political observers believe Paul's appointment is both symbolic and strategic at a time when women voters continue to play a major role in Bengal politics.

The BJP has also frequently criticised Opposition parties over delays in implementing women's reservation in legislatures. Against that background, Paul's appointment is expected to be highlighted by the party as an example of women's representation in leadership roles.

Strong Performance In 2026 Bengal Elections

Agnimitra Paul is currently a two-time MLA from Asansol Dakshin and also serves as BJP's vice-president in West Bengal.

During the 2026 Assembly election campaign, she emerged as one of the BJP's most visible women leaders. She retained her seat by defeating TMC candidate Tapas Banerjee by a margin of more than 40,000 votes.

Her strong victory further increased her influence within the Bengal BJP unit and strengthened speculation about a bigger role in the government.

In fact, before the BJP announced Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister, some party insiders had also discussed Agnimitra Paul's name as a possible contender for the top post.

From Fashion Industry To Politics

Before entering politics in 2019, Agnimitra Paul had already built a successful career in the fashion industry.

She owned a fashion label called "Inga" and designed clothes for several Bollywood celebrities, including late actress Sridevi and veteran actor Hema Malini.

Her fashion work often focused on Bengal's traditional crafts, especially Kantha embroidery. She also presented her collections at major events such as Lakme Fashion Week.

Born and raised in Asansol in a middle-class family, Paul initially studied Botany before moving into fashion technology and management studies.

Rapid Rise Inside BJP

Since joining the BJP in 2019, Agnimitra Paul's political rise has been fast.
Starting from the party's Mahila Morcha, she gradually became one of BJP's key campaign faces in Bengal. She often projected herself as a "daughter of the soil" leader and focused strongly on women's issues and grassroots political work.

Her public speeches, active campaigning and media presence helped her become one of the BJP's most recognisable female leaders in the state.

Controversies And Criminal Cases

Like many active political leaders in Bengal, Agnimitra Paul has also faced controversies.
According to her election affidavit, 23 criminal cases are currently pending against her. These cases are mainly related to allegations connected with protests, unlawful assembly and rioting during political movements.

However, she has not been convicted in any of these cases.
