Mahendrasinh Vaghela, the son of former Gujarat CM Shankersinh Vaghela, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday almost a year after distancing himself from the Congress.
Last year, Mahendrasinh had been vocal about joining BJP and had a meeting with even BJP national president and several state BJP leaders, including chief minister Vijay Rupani to facilitate his move to BJP. However, he did not join the saffron party ahead of the Gujarat assembly elections.
Mahendrasinh was one of the eight Congress MLAs who had voted for BJP candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections for three seats from Gujarat.
Shankarsinh had in September announced support to a newly-formed political front in the state 'Jan Vikalp Morcha' for the forthcoming Assembly polls in the state. Shankarsinh hadthat he offered his son to contest as a Jan Vikalp candidate. However, Mahendrasinh did not contest the election.
