Gujarat's ex-minister Maya Kodnani given 'electric shock' therapy

Ahmedabad, Feb 21: BJP's- former Gujarat minister and a convict in Naroda Patiya massacre case, Maya Kodnani was given electric shock therapy on Thursday.

Reports said that 60-year-old Kodnani was given electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) under anaesthesia, as she has been suffering from a major depressive disorder.

Doctors treating her said that Kodnani has displayed "severe suicidal tendencies" and she has also failed to respond to the medical treatment. She will remain admitted in a government-run civil hospital in Ahmedabad, for a week.

Former child and welfare minister in the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, Kodnani, was administered shock therapy for the first time.

Doctors said that, Kodnani will be put under shock therapy, twice a week, from now onwards.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had extended her interim bail till Feb 24, 2014.

Kodnani was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment following her conviction in Naroda Patiya massacre during 2002 Gujarat riots.
