NAFED to take Indian food products to Gulf, Europe

New Delhi, Apr 19: The Indian diaspora in the Gulf and Europe will soon be able to enjoy authentic 'desi khana' as the country's agricultural cooperative major, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), is planning on entering these markets with India-specific food products soon.

“There have been demands in the last several years from NRIs in the Gulf and Europe to make our products available for them. We have now decided to source India-specific products, process and package them and export them to the Gulf and Europe. The prices will be competitive," NAFED Managing Director C V Ananda Bose said, adding that the Indian products which are currently available in these countries do not have the right quality or the quantity.

Noting that the Indian diaspora in the Gulf consists mainly of the Keralites, NAFED is planning on shipping Kerala-specific products. The organisation is in talks with Gulf organisations and the first batch of the products is expected to be dispatched within two months.

The sales will focus on Dubai and Abu Dhabi because of their status as trading centres in the region, NAFED said.

Besides negotiating with business houses through Indian embassies for exporting the products to Europe, NAFED has appointed internationally renowned independent assessment agencies to monitor the products to ensure highest quality standards.

The products will include consumer-specific products, made available in retail chains like super markets and hyper markets, along with products meant for food service companies like restaurants and event management groups, NAFED said in a press release.
