India will enjoy normal rains: Met Dept chief

New Delhi, Apr 13: India, which is sweating it out in the harshest summer till date, is unlikely to see another drought, weather experts have predicted.

According to the Meteorological Department official Ajit Tyagi the country will witness normal Monsoons in 2010.

In 2009, India was hit by severe drought, which was said to be worst in 37 years. Rains are extremely important for the country as its vast agriculture industry is completely dependent on the monsoons.

The drought has left India reeling under adverse effects such as shortage of grains, double-digit food inflation, price rise among other issues.

Speaking to an international news agency, Tyagi pointed out that the possibility of another drought just a year after the previous one was an unlikely event.

Out of the 20 droughts experienced in the past, 17 were followed by near-normal Monsoons, he informed.

This means that Indians can not only enjoy normal rains this year but also can expect respite from the heat of price rise and double-digit inflation rates.
