Farmer injured in landmine blast

Jammu, Nov 27: A farmer from agriculture department was injured in a blast when he accidently stepped over a landmine in the bordering Kanachak area here in Jammu and Kashmir, police today said.

The farmer, identified as Darshan Kumar, resident of village Chidgali, was tilling the fields adjoining Machail Border Out-Post when he stepped over a landmine yesterday and got injured, the police said.

He was immediately shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, for treatment.

Landmines were planted all along the international border during tension between India and Pakistan.

The government, however, had ordered the demining of the bordering areas in a phased manner but despite authorities' claim of complete removal of mines, incidents of blasts keep on occurring.

Several people and cattle have lost their lives or limbs due to mine explosions for last four years of cease-fire on the borders.
