Mumbai, Aug 26: Vijay Jadhav, one of the five accused arrested on charges of raping a 23-year-old photojournalist on Thursday, decided to have a cup of tea at a stall near the NM Joshi Marg police station, hours after the incident, being confident that he will not be caught.
After that, he even took part in a dahi handi practice session for the occasion of Janmashtami, just a short distance away from the police station, for over two hours, immediately after committing the heinous crime.
DNA reported that Jadhav, a 19-year-old, who was arrested from a video parlour in Madanpura, Agripada, in the wee hours of Saturday, told the police that he left the mill compound at around 7pm.
"He came straight to a building in the BDD chawl opposite the Lower Parel station where some of his friends had organised a dahi handi practice session," an officer said. "He was there for more than two hours."
He then had tea at the stall before leaving for his home in Dhobi Ghat. There he met another accused Salim Ansari, and the two slept at a nearby fish market. They went to Maratha Mandir in Mumbai Central on Friday to catch the matinee show of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Once out of the cinema, they got to know that the police had arrested their partner in crime, Chand Babu Sattar Sheikh. While Jadhav fled to Madanpura and hid in a video parlour, Ansari went to Kurla and boarded a train to Delhi.
Jadav also told the police that they had raped women at the same Shakti Mills compound and filmed them as a threat to stop them from approaching the police in the past. Yet, the hand of the law fell short of catching hold of them.
Crime branch officers of the Mumbai police, along with the Delhi police, arrested Ansari from the slums of Delhi's Ashok Vihar area on Sunday.
Jadhav and four others are accused of raping the woman and beating up her friend in the Shakti Mills compound, close to the Mahalaxmi station.
