Manipal gang rape: Chargesheet filed against accused

Udupi, Aug 23: Finally, some ray of hope for the Manipal gang rape victim. Accused Yogesh, Anand and Hariprasad have been taken in judicial custody on charges of raping a medical student of Manipal University. Balachandra and Harindra, the other two accused were arrested for tampering the evidence.

Post reports from the forensic lab, which goes in favour of the prosecution, all the rapists have been arrested. Out of the five, Yogesh and Anand had attempted suicide, but were formally arrested on July 11 and June 30 respectively. Hariprasad was arrested on June 27, while Balachandra and Harindra were arrested on July 2.

The accused had abducted the victim in an autorickshaw and later gang-raped her near Manipal on June 20. With a fractured leg, she was being treated at Kasturba Hospital. She was discharged on July 4.

Superintendent of police M B Boralingaiah said that the case against the accused is very strong as there were 92 witnesses against them.
