Karnataka: Peaceful bypolls on August 21

Bangalore, Aug 22: Despite expectations by the former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda that about 36.37 lakh voters in both the parliamentary constituencies will be voting in the 4,360 polling booths, the total voting percentage in both the constituencies put together was merely 54.72.

Mandya reported 58.51 percent of votes, while Bangalore Rural reported just 50.93% of votes. Polling took place peacefully in all the voting centers and there were no clashes between the opposition parties.

The counting will be held on the 24th of this month.

The bypolls were held as N Cheluvarayaswamy (Mandya) and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy (Bangalore Rural) quit after being elected to the Assembly in May.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda of the JD(S) has fielded Anita, Kumaraswamy's wife, from Bangalore Rural, and C S Puttaraju in Mandya.

Leading Kannada actor Ramya has been fielded as a Congress candidate from Mandya and D K Suresh, brother of senior Congress leader and MLA D K Shivakumar was fielded from Bangalore Rural.
