Sonia Gandhi launches food security programme

New Delhi, Aug 20: The UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday launched its "ambitious" food security programme in Delhi.

"The ambitious food security scheme is unparalleled in the world and we are pround of it" Sonia Gandhi said at a function in Talkatora Stadium.

While flagging off the scheme, the Congress President said that nearly 80 crore people in Delhi will benefit from Food Security scheme.

She further said that after the launch of the scheme "No poor person will go hungry. We have to be responsible for the poor now while."

The scheme was launched on the occasion of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's 69th birth anniversary.

Calling the scheme as Rajiv Gandhi's dream, she said, "It was his dream that is taking shape today."

Meanwhile,the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protested against the food security programme outside the Talkatora Stadium.

Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel was leading the protest which police tried to disperse by using water cannons.

After launch of the programme, 73.5 lakh people will get foodgrain at subsidised prices.
