Nathwani, a native of Jamnagar, has written a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in this regard. "I have written a letter to Sharif, saying these fishermen should be released on humanitarian grounds," he told PTI last night.
"The Pakistani Prime Minister should sympathetically consider releasing these fishermen given the sorry state in which their families are living in their villages in Gujarat and Union Territory of Daman and Diu," he said.
Pakistan should show this humanitarian gesture on the eve of its Independence Day, Nathwani said, adding 425 Indian fishermen are lodged in Pakistani jails. In the absence of their earning members, these families are finding it difficult to support themselves, he said.
Nathwani said he hopes for a positive response from Sharif.
