Assam: After Bodos & Karbis, demand high for a separate Barak Valley

The UTDC has decided to form strong public opinion in favour of its demand in Hilakandi district in the Barak Valley area in southern Assam. The committee members said at a meeting held on Sunday that injustice and discrimination have affected Barak Valley for long years but neither the state nor the Centre have taken up their cause seriously.
The committee leaders said the Bengali residents of the area have been facing discrimination for over four decades and development in the area has been deliberately stalled by the government of Assam.
The communication is not in good shape either. The leaders appealed to the people of the region to unite for a distinct political and economic identity and said the decision to create Telangana made it an ideal time to press for the demand of a separate Barak Valley.
They said if a few thousands of Bodo or Karbi people could demand separate states, then why not the 40 lakh Bengali residents of the Barak Valley?
