New Delhi, August 1: Theatre artist Waman Kendre has been appointed the director of the National School of Drama (NSD) here. An NSD alumnus, Kendre's appointment is for five years, an official release said on Thursday.

Kendre, who was a student of NSD, did his post-graduation and research in Kerala's folklore. A frontrunner of the Dalit theatre movement in Maharashtra of the late 70s, he is currently heading the Academy of Theatre Arts, Mumbai University.

"Yes he has been appointed as the head of NSD. There were some clarifications that the PMO wanted regarding the recommendations and that is why the process took so long," said Chandresh Kumari Katoch, the culture minister.

Waman said that he received his letter of appointment from NSD three days back. "I am winding up my work here and it may take me around a week to join."

The artist hails from Mumbai and is known for role in plays like "Mohandas", "Ranangan" and "Janeman".
