Proposal to keep parties out of RTI gets Cabinet clearance

rti
New Delhi, Aug 1: The Cabinet on Thursday cleared the RTI Amendment Act and proposed that political parties should be kept outside its scope. On June 3, the Central Information Commission (CIC) had said that six major political parties came within the RTI Act's ambit.

The CIC particularly referred to the CPI(M), Nationalist Congress Party and Bahujan Samaj Party besides the Congress and the BJP as 'public authority'. However, almost all parties, barring a few, have opposed the idea and accused the CIC of doing too much.

To nullify the CIC's order, the department of personnel and training sought exemption for the political parties saying they are not substantially financed by the government.
