PM explains UPA's 'high' record, says he is proud of it
What is the enviable government record? According to a speech delivered by Prime Minister at an Assocham (Association of Chamber so Commerce) meeting, the UPA government has done than its predecessors on various counts.
Here is a list of the claims Dr Singh made at the event:
1. The average growth rate of the UPA government between 2004-05 and 2012-13 fiscal has been eight per cent, which is much better than the 5.7 per cent reached in the previous eight years (1996-2004).
2. Agriculture has done much better in the Eleventh Five Year Plan than in the Tenth. He said the difference is visible in the rise of the real per capita rural consumption at 2.9 per cent between 2004-05 and 2011-12.
He said the growth was just one per cent between 1993-94 and 2004-05. It may be mentioned that PV Narasimha Rao was the prime minister of the country between 1991-96 and Singh had served as his finance minister.
3. Rural real wages have also increased faster in the Eleventh Five Year Plan (at 6.8 per cent per year) as compared to an average 1.1 per cent in the preceding ten years.
4. The percentage of population living below the poverty line reduced at a mere 0.75 percentage points till the UPA government came to power. He said it has fallen by over two per cent since then.
