New Delhi, July 23: Today (Tuesday, July 23) might be proved as a crucial day for Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani. The Supreme Court was expected to deliver its verdict on a plea by Reliance Telecom Ltd (RTL) in connection with 2G spectrum scam.
The company earlier on Monday, July 22 moved the apex court challenging lower court's order of summoning the Ambanis along with 11 others as prosecution witnesses.
RTL, which has been facing trial in the telecom spectrum case, had mentioned about the Supreme Court's previous plea restraining all other courts, including high court, from entertaining any plea arising out of 2G scam case.
The company also had claimed that 2G trial is almost complete and summoning Mr and Mrs Ambani would not serve any purpose at this stage.
A Delhi court earlier had accepted CBI's plea of summoning the Ambanis. Mr and Mrs Ambani were among those 13 witnesses who would be examined in the court as prosecution witnesses. Special CBI judge OP Saini had said, "I find that examination of these witnesses is necessary for just decision of the case..."
The investigative agence -- Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) wanted to ascertain the alleged investment of over Rs 990 crore by Reliance ADA Group companies in Swan telecom Pvt Ltd.
The agency contended Anil Ambani, who is the Chairman of Reliance ADA Group, would be able to "throw light" on the issues of the alleged investment by his group companies.
