Raping own kids, a family tradition?

), July 18: Rape, it seems, has now become a family 'tradition' in some parts of the country. But, 'outrageous' would be an understatement for this family in Bharatpur, Rajasthan where a father has been raping his two daughters for 20 years and was trying the same on his 3 year-old grand-daughter.

Unable to bear anymore, both the women, along with their husbands lodged an FIR in the police station on Tuesday.

Babulal Dhakar, the 62-year old retired government officer and a father of five daughters has been arrested, along with his wife Shakuntala Dhakar. Shockingly, the mother too has been a silent spectator. "On questioning her, she used to ignore the matter saying that it was a family tradition", said the women.

It was anger piled up in the last 20 years that vented out in a statement of one of the women, who said,"What kind of a mother is she? Today we have our own daughters. Let anybody dare raise a finger on them. Both our parents should be punished". She further alleged that they had to undergo several abortions, following the assault. The eldest daughter, in fact, had to undergo one, 20 days before her marriage.

The police was flabbergast when it dug further deep into the case.

"He used to show the girls pornography and then rape them. He even took them to places like Jaipur and Agra. He booked them into hotels and then raped them. He told them if they resisted, he would do the same to their younger siblings. This went on for years from the time they were in class 7 and 8. The mother knew of the crime but she took their father's side," said Anshuman Bhumiya, Superintendent of Police, Bharatpur.

Further investigations are on to find out whether he tried to rape his three younger daughters too.

A retired supervisor from the Krishi Upaj Mandi, Dhakar and his wife have been sent to judicial custody till July 31.
