Name of Bangalore International Airport changed
The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, July 17 approved Civil Aviation Ministry's proposal to change the name of the international airport.
Citing the continuous efforts by the Union External Affair Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister -- SM Krishna, the Union ministry of civil aviation had approved the long pending proposal of by the state government.
According to media reports, the civil aviation ministry had already given its approval for changing BIA after Kempegowda. Earlier it was reported that the proposal was expected to get a final nod in cabinet meeting of the Union government. The new name of BIA is reported to be -- Bengaluru Nadaprabhu Kempegowda International Airport.
Proposal of changing the name had ignited heated arguments among various communities and organisations, with demands for naming it after Tipu Sultan, social reformer Basaveshwara and former Dewan of Mysore Sir M Visvesvaraya.
