Tongam Rina selected for media award
Itanagar, Jul 13: Senior journalist of Arunachal Pradesh-Tongam Rina-has been selected for the prestigious - “Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media - 2013” instituted by Media Foundation, Leipzig, Germany.
Earlier, Tongam Rina, Associate Editor of The Daily, was honoured with the Laadli Media Award 2011-12 for Gender Sensitivity in November last year at Kolkata. Besides Tongam, German journalists Jörg Armbruster, correspondent of the German broadcast station ARD for the Near and Middle East until 2012, Martin Durm, radio reporter of the German broadcast station SWR and Brigitte Alfter and Ides Debruyne from Denmark and Belgium have been chosen for this prestigious award, informed Stephan Seeger, managing director of the Media Foundation said in a communique.
As an Associate Editor, she reports about corruption within local authorities in connection with distribution of food, the questionable construction of dams, environmental scandals and the situation of Indian women. Instituted in 2001, the award carries a prize of 30,000 Euros.
Tongam Rina was critically injured in an assassination attempt on July 15 last year. Meanwhile, members of Arunachal Press Club (APC) and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist (APUWJ), in a meeting here, reviewed Tongam Rina shooting case in view of the recent development. The two organizations, who have been spearheading the fight to seek justice for Tongam, welcomed the news of police filing charge sheet against three alleged accused.
