Youth denied bail in honour killing case

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 27: A local court today turned down the bail plea of a youth, who allegedly beheaded his sister in a case of honour killing.

The additional district sessions Judge Lukanul Haque rejected the bail plea of the accused, Irshad who after beheading her 17 year-old sister Shabnoor, threw her head in her lover's house in Bihari village on August 22, 2012.

According to the prosecution, Shabnoor was in love with a youth from the same village, but her family was against their relationship.

Honour killing cases still persist in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The village panchayat in these areas, reportedly, have a strong foothold and follow a law of their own. As per the 'khap' or the village panchayat, marrying someone from the same community means incest, committing a crime against God.

This has been a matter of serious concern in modern India. Though several NGOs and social activists are protesting against it, the trend still continues.
