Srinagar, June 11: Police and security forces on Monday night claimed to have gunned down at least one Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant at Neelora village of Phulwama district in southern Kashmir.

The police got into action after receiving a tip-off regarding the presence of two militants at Neelora on Monday evening. Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said this later.

The cornered militants started firing once the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police zeroed in on a hideout. The deceased militant was identified as Ashiq Lone of Hef Shirmal.

DIG Kumar said that their operation will continue on Tuesday as another militant was suspected to be trapped inside a residential area in the village. Two SOG men, Constable Mohd Ashraf and SPO Arif Ahmad, were also injured in the gunbattle, he said. They were rushed to the hospital.

Reinforcement of Army's 55 RR, CRPF personnel and police officers were sent to the spot and the entire area was cordoned off.
