Rome, May 7: Giulio Andreotti, the man who was seven times prime minister of Italy, died on May 6, in his home, in Rome family sources said. He was 94.

While the immediate cause of death was unclear. The Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported that he was hospitalised last year for a respiratory ailment.

Andreotti was a leading member of Italy's now defunct Christian Democracy party, which dominated post World War II Italy for decades.

He was a lawmaker in every Italian parliament since 1946 and was made a senator-for-life in 1991.

However, he was accused of being involved in a murder and having mafia ties in the late 1990s, but was later acquitted of both charges.
