New Delhi, April 13: After Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, it seems that Markandey Katju's new project is --Devinderpal Singh Bhullar. A day after Supreme Court's verdict on Khalistan Liberation Force terrorist over death penalty, the Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Justice (retd) on Saturday, April 13 released his six-page letter to the President Pranab Mukherjee for mercy for the former.

In his latter to the President, Katju requested for pardon for Bhullar and wrote, "Bhullar's mercy was rejected under Article 72 of Constitution, there is nothing in Article 72 to debar a 2nd mercy petition."

"Article 72 does not state who can make the mercy petition. Hence, I as citizen of India am also entitled to move this mercy petition. Justice Shah has noticed that the only evidence against Bhullar is his alleged confessional statement to the investigating office," he added.

"Justice Shah has observed that the rest of the accused who are named in the confessional statement are not convicted or tried. Justice Shah noted conviction was wrong "when the confessional statement is recorded by the investigating officer," said Katju.

The apex court on Friday rejected Bhullar's plea and claimed that he would be executed. Bhullar, the Khalistan Liberation Force terrorist was awarded capital punishment for his role in the bomb attack on former Youth Congress president MS Bitta in 1993. 9 policemen were killed while 25, including Bitta, were injured.

Earlier Katju had voiced for Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt who soon will be sent to jail as he was convicted under illegal arms possession act during 1993 Bombay Blasts case.
