New Delhi, April 1: The first arrest in connection with slain BSP leader Deepak Bharadwaj has been made. On Monday, the Delhi police arrested Purushottam Rana, sharpshooter who has been nailed as the prime accused.

On Sunday, the police arrested the driver of the Skoda car, Amit which was used by Bharadwaj's killers.

After the murder of Bharadwaj on March 26, several people have been questioned and detained. Police also explored whether his immediate family has been involved in the murder. His elder son was questioned in detail by the police on Sunday.

The Delhi police had come under criticism that depsite having CCTV footage they had not made any arrests.

Police suspect that dispute over property might be reason behind the murder since a lot of Bharadwaj's property is registered in his own name. Sources said that Bharadwaj had not given his family a share in the money. "He did not keep the family in the loop about his property deals and had asked his wife and sons to return the ownership of the Dwarka-based school, Shiksha Bharati School, which they were running," said a source.

Another suspect is a lady acquaintance of Bharadwaj who they feel may be connected to the murder. They suspect that someone very close to him, who is aware of his schedule is involved in the murder. The police conducted raids at several places in connection with the murder case. Many people have been detained. The cops believe that the detained persons could be contract killers.

Bharadwaj was the richest candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls with declared assets of over Rs 600 crore.
