Mamata & Rape theory: How women politicians trivialise rape

New Delhi, March 23: India endured worldwide "ignominy" for rising number of

incidents in recent times. But, instead of working towards putting an end to crime against

, our female politicians are trivialising the issue by their "irresponsible and mindless" comments.

Take for instance what Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said about rise in number of rape cases on Friday, March 23. The West Bengal CM linked rising cases of rapes to increase in the population, while claiming that there were only 45 such cases till November 2012 in Kolkata in comparison to 621 in Delhi in the same year.

"The population is increasing. Is the population in West Bengal the same as it was during the time of Bidhan Chandra Roy? You have raised many questions on law order. You are saying that rapes are increasing," Banerjee told the Assembly.

"The population is increasing, cars are increasing, infrastructure is increasing, shopping malls are increasing. Inoxes (multiplex) are coming up. Young people are becoming modern. Don't you welcome it?" she asked while winding up the debate on the Governor's address.

Actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Thursday, March 22 said the anti-rape bill is anti-male and that its provisions make men vulnerable to misuse of the law.

"It's not just men who stalk women. Bachchan said women too stalk men and one often hears women say, "Oh! That man is so hot."

"Please do not do justice to one section at the cost of the other," said Bachchan.

Samajwadi Party leader made the comment in Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013 (Anti-rape Bill). The Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on Thursday, two days after the Bill got approval in Lok Sabha.

Rising number of rape cases have become a concern for the law enforcing agencies in the country, especially after the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student on a moving bus in the national capital on December 16, 2012.
