Beijing, March 21: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday expressed condolences to the acting president of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid, over the death of President Zillur Rahman.

The Chinese President said Rahman had attached importance to the bilateral relations between the two nations and made major contributions to the friendship between the two nations and the practical cooperation in various sectors. Xi also recalled his meeting with the late president during his visit to Bangladesh in 2010.

The Chinese president, who recently took over the reins, said the Chinese government and the people attach a lot of importance to the country's relation with Bangladesh and look forward to improve the cooperative work for mutual benefit.

The 84-year-old Rahman, who was installed as the president in 2009 after the Awami League won the 2008 general elections, died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Wednesday after prolonged illness. A three-day mourning was declared in Bangladesh following Rahman's demise.
