Bitti Mohanty
Thiruvanthapuram, Mar 17: Three special teams set up by the Kerala Police are looking into the curious case of Bitti Mohanty but none of them have found out how he succeeded in duping almost everybody that he met during the past six and half years.

Ever since Bitti jumped parole in Nov 2006, Rajasthan Police had been searching for the rape convict but he evaded arrest till ten days ago when their Kerala counterparts finally nabbed him.

In the interim, Bitti lived at different places in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. He somehow procured a driver's licence, voter ID card and passport in the name of Raghav Rajan. Under the fake identity, he obtained the job of computer operator in Sri Vidya College that is not too far from Puttaparthi. The town in Anantapur district is famous for being the birthplace of Sathya Sai Baba.

Raghav Rajan later conned SV Rama Rao, headmaster of Deena Janoddharana Residential Hostel, into employing him as a teacher at the Deena Janoddharana-run school in Puttaparthi. Rama Rao was so impressed by the new teacher that he arranged an apartment for him. He also motivated Raghav Rajan to study further.

Accordingly, Raghav Rajan left Puttaparthi in 2009 and enrolled as a MBA student at the Chinmaya Institute of Technology in Chala, Kerala. While applying for admission, he showed a certificate that was actually issued by an university in Odisha to Bitti.

After completing the course, Raghav Rajan joined the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) as a probationary officer in 2012. He served at the Madayi branch of the SBT for seven months before his luck finally ran out.

The bank received an anonymous letter that stated that Raghav Rajan is a convicted rapist. Since several discrepancies were found in the documents produced by him while joining duty, SBT officials alerted the police. They took him into custody for impersonation on Mar 8.

Over the past week, a team of police officials took Raghav Rajan to Rajasthan to confirm that he is indeed Bitti. Another team visited Puttaparthi to ascertain who all helped him prepare the forged documents. A third team met Bitti's father BB Mohanty in Odisha.

However, the investigators are still clueless on one aspect - how Bitti managed to con so many people that too at a time when he was a fugitive.
