Mystery over Ram Singh's death in Tihar: Suicide or Murder?

Lawyers and family members of the accused started accusing police of killing Ram Singh who was found hanging inside the prison cell where he was lodged.
Dismissing the reports of suicide, VK Anand, Ram Singh's lawyer, said, "The accused were upset over public sentiments initially but no point were they suicidal."
According to Mr Anand, Ram Singh was happy over the progress of the court trials and he used to meet his family members on daily basis. The lawyer also demanded an investigation by CBI to verify the real facts what had happened inside the Tihar jail.
Ram Singh's family members claimed that Ram Singh had complained of being tortured in prison. Supporting Mr Ananda's demand, they too sought for a CBI inquiry to determine how he died.
Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, who rushed to meet Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde following the report of Ram Singh's alleged suicide, said, "A magisterial inquiry has already been ordered. Till the report comes, it will be difficult to comment on the issue. Let the autopsy report come, things will be clear."
Speaking about Ram Singh, the prison's law officer Sunil Gupta was quoted as saying, "He tied all his clothes together and used the ceiling grill and a wooden stool to hang himself."
Tihar Jail officials say he was not alone in his cell, and a guard was posted near Jail No 3, where he was lodged. However, they are unable to explain how Ram Singh was able to hang himself.
Ram Singh along with five other members allegedly had raped and tortured a 23-year-old para-medical students and later throw her out of a moving bus. The victim later died in a hospital in Singapore.
The case woke up the entire nation. People protested on the streets and demanded death penalty for rapists. The government also formed Justice JS Verma committee to come up with strict laws to deal with sexual crimes committed against women.
Ram Singh's suicide brought police role under scanner. However, they did not delay to beef up security of other accused who also are lodged in different cells of the jail.
