How 'double identity' of Bitti Mohanty confuses police

Police sources say initially the arrested man confessed that he was Bitti Mohanty. But, now he is retracting his own confession and claiming that he is Raghav Rajan.
Kerala police on Saturday arrested one man called Raghav Rajan for alleged impersonation and forgery. Now, it has been revealed the arrested person is none other than Bitti Mohanty, who was convicted for raping a German woman.
Bitti is likely to be produced in court on Monday.
Bitti has been absconding for more than six years now. A fast-track court had earlier given Bitti seven years of imprisonment.
In fact, Bitti was working in a bank in Kerala, before he was arrested. Police nailed Bitti following up on the complaint of his employer in the State Bank of Travancore.
His employer told police that personal details he had given did not match up. "Bitti had been working with the bank for seven months and claimed to hold an MBA degree from Kannur University," said a police official. Bitti is said to be arrested from Kannur in Kerala.
The case is high profile as Bitti is the son of former Odisha DGP BB Mohanty, who helped him to jump parole. Earlier, Bitti was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for raping a 26-year-old German tourist in Alwar, Rajasthan.
Now, the former DGP BB Mohanty is under scrutiny for allegedly aiding his son Bitti Mohanty, a rape convict, while he was absconding.
But, he took advantage of his father's position when he was allowed a 15-day parole to meet his ailing mother in 2006. Bitti jumped parole and was absconding since then. Bitti's father was accused of helping his son jump parole.
The former Odisha DGP was suspended and even arrested on the charge of helping and hiding his son. But he was later reinstated in service and retired last year. In a TV interview earlier, Bitti's father had said, "I suspect that he is dead.
Otherwise no son could have stayed hiding when his father and his family is going through such an agony." Initially police was reluctant to confirm that the arrested person was Bitti.
SP Kannur Rahul R Nair said, "Bitti's identity is yet to be ascertained. We have arrested a person by the name of Raghav Rajan. The man arrested has been held in a case of impersonation. The actual identity will be ascertained by Rajasthan Police. He was arrested after a complaint from bank officials."
