Vijender Singh
Amritsar, March 11: India's young boxing star Vijender Singh failed to appear before Punjab police who were expected to grill the boxer in connection with a massive drug haul.

Vijender was supposed to appear either before Haryana Police headquarters in Panchkula or the Punjab Police headquarters in Chandigarh on Monday, March 11. Despite his confirmation about his appearance before police, Vijender surprisingly missed the visit, said sources.

Vijender, who was honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, won a bronze medal at 2006 Asian Games in Doha, a bronze at 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is the first Indian boxer who won an Olympic medal. Vijender was also the top-ranked boxer in middle-weight category in 2009.

The boxer has been facing serious allegations regarding the drug case. Now His friend Ram Singh's statement seem to have cornered him. Ram Singh, another boxer, claimed, "We had taken very small quantity of drugs, less than two gm each. But we are not habitual takers of drugs and had tried it just for adventure. We did not intend to improve our stamina or performance by taking it."

Speaking about Vijender's alleged links to drug racket, Ram Singh said, "Vijender was in touch with some Mumbai celebrities, who were regular in rave parties and took drugs. Therefore we also tried it. However, we did not pay anything to Kahlon for drugs."

Anoop Singh Kahlon is the main accused who has been arrested regarding the massive drug haul. Vijender Singh soon will be summoned and be questioned regarding the case. According to Ram Singh, Vijender Singh was in constant touch with Kahlon.

Ram Singh has already been expelled from the National Institute of Sports (NIS) camp in connection with recovery of 26 kg of heroin worth Rs 130 crore in Punjab. Meanwhile, Sports Ministry also claimed that Vijender too may face severe punishment if he is found to be guilty.
