Delhi gangrape case: Doc at Singapore hospital testifies

New Delhi, Feb 25: A doctor at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore who conducted post mortem on the Delhi gang-rape victim at the fag end of last year testified through video conferencing on Monday in a fast track court here that is trying the sensational case.

Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna recorded Dr Paul Chui's statement. The Senior Consultant (Forensic Pathology) is one of the star prosecution witnesses. The lawyer appearing for the five accused in the case cross examined Dr Chui.

Another doctor working at the Singapore hospital is slated to testify on Tuesday.

Eleven days after she was raped by the accused and a minor on a moving bus here, the victim was shifted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital since surgeons at the Safdarjung Hospital where she initially underwent treatment could not stablise her condition. However, the victim succumbed to her injuries on Dec 29, 2012.

The bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh alongwith their accomplices Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Singh and the hitherto unnamed minor attacked the 23-year-old paramedical student and her male companion with rods once the duo boarded the bus from Munirka that fateful night.

The men sexually assaulted the victim before stripping her and her friend. Then the badly injured duo was thrown out of the bus near the Mahipalpur flyover. Police control room vans later picked up both of them and rushed them to hospital.

The victim's friend identified the culprits in Tihar jail on Dec 20. Despite him telling the police that the sixth accused in the case was the most brutal of the lot, the minor is likely to escape harsh punishment as he will only be tried under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The other accused could be awarded life imprisonment and even the death penalty for committing the horrific crime that shocked the nation's collective conscience.
